Premier League (PL) games have been tight at St James’ Park this season, with all four finishing with under 2.5 goals (W1, D2, L1), and three goalless at half-time. A 1-0 win over Manchester United in their last home match did give the ‘Magpies’ a second consecutive PL home clean sheet, as they now search for a third in a row for the first time since March 2018.
Six of Newcastle’s last eight PL victories have now been accompanied by a clean sheet, and with three of the hosts’ last four top-flight games witnessing no goal before the 70th minute, another solid defensive performance could be likely here. Indeed Newcastle’s last two competitive H2H wins also came ‘to nil’.
Wolverhampton Wanderers got their first away win of the campaign in their last PL road trip, with a shock 2-0 victory over reigning champions Manchester City. That was also their first away league game this season where they netted the opener (W1, D2, L1).
Although the visitors’ away league fixtures have seen nine goals in total so far (2.25 per fixture average), seven of those strikes (77.78%) have been confined to the first and last 15 minutes. With the last two H2Hs seeing a goal after the 75th minute, that trend could continue.
Players to watch: Teenager Matthew Longstaff (NEW) scored the winner against Manchester United on a dream PL debut at St James’ Park.
Raúl Jiménez netted in Wolves’ last PL match - all three of his league strikes this season have arrived after the 60th minute.
Stat attack: Four of Newcastle’s last five PL home defeats have come by a one-goal margin.
Three of Wolves’ four away league games have been goalless at half-time.
Both teams have scored in the previous eight top-flight H2Hs.
